In June 2010, Food Bank for the Heartland launched a new program called Fresh Produce that is helping to meet an important need in the community. During the summer months, fresh fruits and vegetables are distributed each week from stands that are set up at locations in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. The Fresh Produce stands are run by Food Bank staff members and volunteers.
There are many produce deserts in our area. By bringing free vegetables and fruits to individuals and families in need, the Food Bank lives out its commitment to improve nutritional options regardless of income. The Food Bank receives donations for its Fresh Produce stands from farmers, local gardens and grocery stores. We are distributing more than 6,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables each week to over 200 families.
Thank you to Coventry Nebraska for sponsoring the produce stands at Washington Library and the Salvation Army Kroc Center! We appreciate your support!
